About Great Pyrenées
Originating in the Pyrenées mountains, Great Pyrenées were bred to be livestock guardians. While often mistaken for a herding breed, they do not have the instinct to herd animals. Pyrs, as they often referred to, are more likely to be sitting perched watching their herds to ensure they are safe. Pyrs work well with other herding dogs on farms if necessary for flocks. They also make wonderful family companions as long as they have space to roam in a fenced in yard.
A fiercely loyal and protective breed, Pyrs are great with families and other dogs. They are often mild mannered and gentle natured, only becoming aggressive if there is a threat to their family. Their double coat is protects them from cold and heat. At its base, the coat is slightly oily allowing them to stay cleaner than some other long white haired breeds. The coat does require grooming as Pyrs will blow their coats (shed) approximately twice per year.
Triumph Heritage Farm’s Breeding Program
Breeding of Great Pyrenées is not the primary reason these amazing dogs are on the farm. All of them are livestock guardians and amazing at what they do! The choice to breed them is first based on their fitness and on the needs of the farm. While they will not be producing several litters in the course of their lifetime, it is still critical to ensure they are producing a quality litter and it is healthy for the mother. All breeding dogs are genetic tested to look for any predisposition to disease they may pass on as well as OFA heart certified to ensure they have good cardiac health. Results for any of the dogs are available upon request. Click the highlighted links below to learn more about these two testing processes.
